What is a smoke control area?

Many UK locations have smoke-control restrictions. Check the rules for your address before choosing a fuel.

Check your area

Contact your local council to confirm whether your home is in a smoke control area.

Check the fuel and appliance

GOV.UK explains that smoke-control areas restrict chimney smoke and the fuels that may be burned. Authorised fuels can be used subject to the rules. Unauthorised fuels, including wood, require an appropriate exempt appliance, and you must follow the manufacturer's permitted fuel types.

Read the current rules

Requirements and enforcement depend on location. Read GOV.UK: smoke control areas, the rules and ask your council if anything is unclear. The government guidance links to authorised-fuel and exempt-appliance lists.

Before placing an order
